Velázquez Comments on OIG Report and Women’s Procurement Program

Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY), the Ranking Member of the House Small Business Committee, commented today on a recent Small Business Administration Office of Inspector General (OIG) report on the Women’s-Owned Federal Contracting Program:

“It is alarming that the OIG has determined that more than $52 million of federal outlays failed to comply with sole-source requirements in the law.

“I was proud to work in a bipartisan manner to strengthen the Women’s Procurement Program as part of the 2015 Defense Authorization Act. Unfortunately, it appears that SBA has not kept pace with legislative changes and has failed to meet the procedures necessary to ensure the program functions as intended. Without proper controls, contracts that should flow to female entrepreneurs may instead go to ineligible companies.  I will continue monitoring to see that SBA implements the OIG’s recommendations and adopts the appropriate safeguards.”
