Chairwoman Velázquez on Lackluster May Jobs Report

Washington, D.C.— Today, House Small Business Committee Chairwoman Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) issued the following statement after the Labor Department released its May jobs statement, in which 75,000 jobs were added to the economy, well below average:

“As today’s drastically underperforming jobs report warns, the economic uncertainty fueled by this Administration’s erratic policies and rhetoric is undermining our economy.

“When we look closely at how the economy is working for small business job creation and growth, the landscape is equally dim. In May, small business job creation remained flat, reflecting a lackluster trajectory that has defined 2019 thus far. Meanwhile, small business employment and wage growth also remain weak.

“This Administration has abused its power by using tariffs to stoke fear in our top trading partners. This President has provoked one trade war after another, each devoid of any long-term strategy; and all at a cost to Main Streets across America.

“Let today’s report serve as a wake-up call to this Administration that needlessly placing taxes on the backs of American businesses and consumers is no way to govern, and yes—it has tangible consequences for our economy here at home.”
