Chairwoman Velázquez on Trump’s Escalation of Trade War

Washington, D.C.— Today, House Small Business Committee Chairwoman Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) issued the following statement after President Trump announced new tariffs on $300 billion in Chinese imports:

“The ongoing trade war has already taken a massive toll on America’s consumers and small businesses, forcing many to pay an unnecessary tax placed on their back by this Administration.

“Now, because of his inability to strike a deal with China, President Trump wants to extend tariffs to nearly all Chinese goods sent to the United States. Such a move drastically increases uncertainty on Main Street, while adding insult to injury for the small businesses and American farmers already hurting from the trade war.

“By maintaining steady relationships with trade partners, many American small business owners are able to stock the shelves, make payroll, and create jobs in communities across the country. For far too many Americans, their very livelihood is on the line each day President Trump’s trade war continues.

“I strongly urge the President to reverse course and put an end to this needless trade war.”
