Chairwoman Velázquez on Black History Month

Washington, D.C.—Today, in recognition of Black History Month, House Small Business Committee Chairwoman Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) released the following statement:

“Every Black History Month, our nation celebrates the proud heritage and countless contributions of African Americans.

“African Americans make up a crucial sector of America’s small business economy, owning 2.6 million small businesses that employ nearly one million people and generate over $150 billion yearly. Despite this success, unfortunately, people of color often face unique barriers to entrepreneurial success, be it in securing affordable capital, bidding on federal contracts, or receiving technical assistance.

“In the 116th Congress, as Chairwoman of the Small Business Committee, I will continue to push for solutions that break down these barriers by strengthening opportunities for underserved businesses across the board. When it comes to crafting hearings, I will work diligently to ensure that minority entrepreneurs have a seat at the table and a platform to make their voices heard in Congress.”
