Washington, D.C.— Today, House Small Business Committee Chairwoman Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) issued the following statement after the Labor Department released its May jobs report:
“After over a year of struggling under the pandemic, the May jobs report shows that our economic recovery is making progress. During the first four months of the Biden Administration, we’ve seen record job growth, with the unemployment rate recently returning to its lowest level since the pandemic hit. Under President Biden, our economy has created more than 2 million jobs, over three times the amount of jobs created during the first four months of the Trump administration. Small businesses are leading the way in this recovery. Last month the leisure and hospitality industries, small business heavy sectors hit hard by the pandemic, generated over 50% of May’s job gains. These numbers show that relief programs like the Restaurant Revitalization Fund are working and providing small businesses with the support they need to recover.
“But this crisis is not over. COVID inflicted deep wounds on our nation’s economy, and we can’t expect recovery to occur spontaneously. That’s why we must continue to advance President Biden’s agenda by passing the American Jobs Plan and the American Families Plan. These initiatives will create millions of good-paying jobs and help provide our economy the boost it needs to reach full recovery and progress towards future growth.
“It’s also vital that we stay vigilant in our fight against COVID and continue to vaccinate the maximum number of Americans possible. Our economy can’t fully reopen, and our small businesses can’t fully recover until this virus is in our rearview mirror. So, I encourage all American’s to get vaccinated so we can crush COVID once and for all.”
