Chairwoman Velázquez on February Jobs Report

Washington, D.C.— Today, House Small Business Committee Chairwoman Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) issued the following statement after the Labor Department released its February jobs report:

“The February jobs numbers continue to build on the record-breaking job creation we saw in the first year of the Biden administration. With this report, our economy has added 7.4 million new jobs since President Biden took office, with 1.15 million jobs added in the first months of 2021. As we approach one year since the passage of the American Rescue Plan, it’s clear that the policies advanced by House Democrats and the Biden Administration have paved the way for this strong recovery. Last month, our economy exceeded expectations by adding 678,000 new jobs while the overall unemployment rate dropped to 3.8%. Small firms led the way in this job creation, with the small business dominated leisure and hospitality industry adding 179,000 jobs.

“I’m ecstatic by the progress outlined in today’s report, but we must build off this momentum and continue to bolster our economy. As President Biden indicated in his State of the Union address, it’s vital that we take concrete steps to strengthen American manufacturing, lower costs for working families, and promote fair competition for small businesses. By doing this, we can push our recovery forward and set the stage for our economy to thrive in the future. I look forward to working with my colleagues in Congress to make the President’s vision a reality and build a better America for working families.”
