Washington, D.C.—Today, House Small Business Committee Chairwoman Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) released the following statement in response to the Commerce Department’s Fourth Quarter and Annual 2018 Gross Domestic Product (GDP) report:
“Today’s GDP report reflects a series of policies and actions this Administration has taken to weaken Main Street businesses across America.
“From granting tax cuts that overwhelmingly benefit massive corporations to engaging in tit-for-tat tariffs that hurt small manufacturers and farmers, it is clear this Administration has made small businesses an afterthought.
“While the report does not fully capture the economic consequences of the 35-day government shutdown, we know that it resulted in an erosion of consumer confidence and is leading economists to predict a decline in overall growth for the first quarter of this year.
“Instead of being forced to live with the economic uncertainty fueled by this Administration’s erratic policies, America’s small business sector deserves a better deal.”
