Chairwoman Velázquez on July Jobs Report

Washington, D.C.— Today, House Small Business Committee Chairwoman Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) issued the following statement after the Labor Department released its July jobs report showing that non-farm payroll employment increased by 528,000:

“Today’s jobs report crushed expectations, adding a robust 528,000 jobs and showcasing the resiliency of our recovery. With today’s report, we’ve passed an important marker, as our economy has gained back all the jobs lost during the COVID crisis. This achievement wasn’t luck, but rather the result of Congressional Democrats and the Biden Administration’s efforts to support the economy and working families through policies like the American Rescue Plan. This economic plan has created one of the greatest job markets in American history and matched the lowest unemployment rate in 50 years. Yet, despite all the progress we’ve made, Congress still has work to do. Costs remain too high for Americans, and we must continue to grow the economy. That’s why I look forward to supporting the Inflation Reduction Act, which lowers health care and energy costs, makes generational investments in climate, and helps ensure that large corporations pay their fair share in taxes. By advancing a reconciliation bill that helps tame inflation and expand economic opportunity, we can continue progressing on the President’s plan to build the economy from the bottom up and middle out.”
