Chairwoman Velázquez on Jobs Report

Washington, D.C.— Today, House Small Business Committee Chairwoman Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) issued the following statement after the Labor Department released its February jobs statement:

“Today’s numbers are disappointing, with our economy underperforming estimates by adding just 20,000 jobs. For America’s small business sector, these lackluster figures are compounded by recent news of a slowdown in hiring and are a signal of greater economic headwinds.

“For the small manufacturer who continues to rack up higher costs as a result of the ongoing trade war, the President’s inability to strike a deal with China has only fueled their economic uncertainty. Furthermore, while this Administration’s corporate tax cuts may have juiced the economy temporarily, economists are now predicting its effects to fizzle out and even contribute to a potential broader economic slowdown.

“Amidst the uncertainty reflected in this report, one thing is clear—America’s small business owners deserve sustainable federal investments in their livelihoods and their futures.”
