Ranking Member Velázquez on September Jobs Report

Washington, D.C. – Today, Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY), Ranking Member of the House Small Business Committee, issued the following statement after the Labor Department released its September jobs report showing that nonfarm payroll employment increased by 254,000:

“The September jobs report showcases the continuing strength of the Biden-Harris economy, as we added over 250,000 new jobs and the unemployment rate ticked down to 4.1%. Today’s report brings the total number of jobs created under the Biden-Harris administration to over 16 million, the most in four years for any administration. At the same time, wages are rising faster than prices, unemployment remains near historic lows, small businesses have created new jobs at record rates, and 19 million entrepreneurs have applied to start new small businesses. These results were no accident; they were the work of the Biden-Harris administration and Democrats in Congress.

“Democrats are focused on building on this momentum by continuing to lower costs for working families and create an economy where everyone can succeed. Meanwhile, Republicans are focused on cutting taxes for billionaires and large corporations and enacting their Project 2025 agenda to gut the programs Americans rely on. I look forward to working with my Democratic colleagues to protect our gains under the Biden-Harris administration and continue to build an economy where working families come first.”
