Chairwoman Velázquez on March Jobs Report

Washington, D.C.— Today, House Small Business Committee Chairwoman Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) issued the following statement after the Labor Department released its March jobs statement:

“Today’s jobs report is certainly an improvement from February’s dismal figures, yet, it is also a reminder that our economy continues to show signs of weakness as a result of this Administration’s erratic policies. This is particularly concerning for the small business economy, as March marked the first decline in job growth this year.

“Earlier this week, our Subcommittee on Rural Development, Agriculture, Trade, and Entrepreneurship heard firsthand from family farmers and workers whose bottom line has been hurt by the President’s reckless trade war. Instead of provoking our major trade partners, this Administration must reach a deal to provide the stability and relief our small businesses deserve.

"In a move that would add insult to injury for our small businesses and farmers dealing with trade uncertainty, the President also recently threatened to shut down the Southern border. Doing so would not only be unprecedented, but economically catastrophic for many hardworking families who depend on trade with Mexico to sustain their business.

“America’s small businesses deserve an economy that is both prosperous and stable—and they are not getting either from this Administration’s policies.”
