Chairwoman Velázquez on National Hispanic Heritage Month

Washington, D.C.— Today, House Small Business Committee Chairwoman Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) issued the following statement for National Hispanic Heritage Month, which is recognized each year from September 15th to October 15th:

“Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to recognize the history, culture, and achievements of the Hispanic-American community. And in the small business sector, there is plenty to celebrate. Hispanic-Americans are starting businesses at rates that are higher than any other group. And Latino-owned businesses contribute over $700 billion to the economy each year.

“But, as we celebrate these successes, we must also acknowledge that there is still significant progress to be made when it comes to creating opportunity for Latinos. On average, Hispanic entrepreneurs have a harder time accessing capital than non-minorities. Further leveling the playing field for minority entrepreneurs will require us to continue the fight of breaking down deep structural inequalities that exist in our society.

“This Hispanic Heritage Month, join me in honoring the successes of the Hispanic American community and in committing to work for a better future.”
