Washington, D.C.— Today, House Small Business Committee Chairwoman Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) issued the following statement after the Labor Department released its September jobs report:
“The September jobs report shows that the economy is steadily progressing toward recovery. Our national unemployment rate fell to 4.8%; a mark America didn’t hit following the Great Recession until January 2016. The report also shows that hours worked are up, wages continue to rise, and black unemployment keeps falling.
“But despite the 194,000 jobs added, it’s clear that the Delta variant squeezed the economy last month. Fortunately, many health experts believe that Delta may have peaked with cases declining in response to the Biden administration’s public health initiatives. However, the impact of the virus on our recovery reiterates the need for every American to get vaccinated. The need for Congress to continue to enact President Biden’s Build Back Better agenda is also abundantly clear. The Build Back Better act will fuel our recovery, creating millions of jobs and delivering a generational investment in American small businesses. I will continue to work diligently to send this bill to the President’s desk as soon as possible.”
