Chairwoman Velázquez on January Jobs Report

Washington, D.C.— Today, House Small Business Committee Chairwoman Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) issued the following statement after the Labor Department released its January jobs report:

“The January jobs report is more proof that President Biden’s economic plan has our country on the right track. Despite all the challenges the rapid spread of Omicron presented, our economy beat expectations and added 467,000 new jobs last month. Small firms led the way in achieving these gains. The leisure and hospitality industry hired 151,000 workers in January, with bars and restaurants hiring 108,000 employees. In addition to the stellar topline numbers, I was encouraged to see the rise in labor force participation and the upward revision of the overall jobs numbers in November and December. With this report, the economy added 6.6 million jobs during President Biden’s first year in office, the most on record.

“Our economy is well on its way to recovery; these jobs numbers confirm that. However, we are not all the way there. That’s why we must continue to push forward by promoting sound public health measures and advancing policies that create jobs and invest in workers. The case for passing the Build Back Better Act is as strong today as when House Democrats passed it last November. It’s time for the Senate to pass this transformational piece of legislation and make good on our commitment to working families.”
