Ranking Member Velázquez on August Jobs Report

Washington, D.C.— Today, Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY), Ranking Member of the House Small Business Committee, issued the following statement after the Labor Department released its August jobs report showing that nonfarm payroll employment increased by 187,000:

“Today, the Labor Department reported that our economy created another 187,000 jobs in August, bringing the total new jobs added under the Biden administration to over 13.4 million. Today’s report shows that our economy is strong and is moving forward at a steady pace. We have much to celebrate as we enter Labor Day weekend. Wages are rising, unemployment remains near historic lows, and more Americans are returning to work. The economic policies of the Biden administration and Congressional Democrats have enabled this progress and facilitated our rapid recovery from the pandemic.

“Unfortunately, Republican’s threats to shut down the federal government threaten all we’ve achieved. A prolonged government shutdown would hurt American’s livelihoods, delay federal spending, and suspend vital federal services. The difference could not be clearer, as Democrats focus on continuing to build the economy from the bottom up and the middle out, Republicans are threatening an ideologically driven shutdown that would hurt working families.”
