Washington, D.C.— Today, Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY), Ranking Member of the House Small Business Committee, issued the following statement after the Labor Department released its January jobs report showing that nonfarm payroll employment increased by 353,000:
“The January jobs report is just further evidence that our nation’s economic recovery from COVID is leading the world. Under President Biden, the U.S. economy has created 14.8 million jobs, unemployment remains near historic lows, and we are making progress in our fight against inflation. The January jobs report also showed that wages continue to rise, and prime-age employment is growing. While Republicans root for a recession, the Biden economy continues to move full steam ahead. Small businesses are leading the way in this growth. In January, the White House announced that Americans filed 16 million new business applications during the first three years of the Biden administration, the strongest stretch on record.
“The President’s plan to grow the economy from the middle out and the bottom up is succeeding, but there is still much work to be done. That’s why my Democratic colleagues and I are focused on expanding on this progress and continuing to build an economy where working families can thrive.”
