WASHINGTON- Today, Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez, Ranking Member of the House Small Business Committee, released the following statement after President Donald Trump fired 17 independent inspectors general at various agencies, including the Small Business Administration:
“Inspectors General play a vital role as independent watchdogs, working to uncover waste, fraud, and abuse while promoting transparency and accountability in our government. Trump’s Friday night purge of these vital civil servants came without the mandatory 30-day notice to Congress of his intent. His actions were likely illegal and constitute an attack on the principles of accountability and good governance.
“Throughout the pandemic and its aftermath, our committee worked closely with SBA Inspector General Hannibal ‘Mike’ Ware to uncover waste, fraud, and abuse. Notably, fraud targeting small business pandemic programs was at its highest during the first Trump administration. IG Ware’s efforts were critical to holding fraudsters accountable and reclaiming federal funds.
“Last Congress, committee Republicans praised Mr. Ware for his work to protect taxpayer dollars and guard against fraud at SBA. Where are those voices now? Will any Republican step up to defend the rule of law and the crucial oversight Mr. Ware and other Inspectors General provide?
“Replacing experienced, independent watchdogs with political allies creates a dangerous path toward corruption and unchecked power. The American people deserve leadership that values integrity and transparency over partisan politics. I urge all of my colleagues to demand accountability and speak out against these unjustified firings.”
