WASHINGTON D.C.- Today, Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY), Ranking Member of the House Small Business Committee, issued the following statement after the Labor Department released its August jobs report:

“Today’s Jobs Report reveals an alarming truth. This downturn is a direct consequence of illegal tariffs, soaring inflation, and the decline of the immigrant workforce, policies pushed by the Trump administration.

According to the latest report, unemployment has climbed to 4.3% in August, the highest since 2021. At the same time, wage growth is stalling all because Trump’s reckless policies are driving our economy straight off a cliff.

This trend points to a dark future of a weaker economy, fewer opportunities, stagnant wages, and rising insecurity for working people across America — especially working-class families, single mothers, immigrants, and underserved communities, who are always hit the hardest in times of crisis.

Meanwhile, Trump continues to push racist, and unlawful policies to satisfy its own ego, risking the stability of our economy and the well-being of our families. Republicans have done nothing to stop this destruction. Many have stood by and supported these policies, ignoring how they devastate their own districts while offering no solutions, no relief, and no accountability.”
